Leaders, like magnets, have the ability to draw in powerful attractions. When we take honest looks at our leadership styles and capacities we can better determine what type of followers are naturally drawn to us and who fill the space around us.

During some of my coaching experiences, I’ve had leaders ask why there always seem to be complainers and negative people in their spaces who get in the way of and appear to want only to sabotage progress. My question to those leaders has been: What signals might your actions and words be transmitting to the people following your leadership? 

After a few moments of stunned silence, that simple question has led to hour after hour of self-discovery by reflective leaders who constantly examine why they might be getting the results they’re getting. As a next step, I’d guide the leader to chart specific actions and verbiage they’ve been sharing, and then parse out what could clearly and easily be interpreted as negative. Then, we’d talk through how the leader could turn each negative into a positive in order to help turn negative outcomes into positive ones.

As the leader being coached by me became more intentional about transmitting positive leadership signals – even during challenging times – followers consistently became more positive in how they shared their perspectives and in approaches they used to solve problems.

It’s a healthy leadership practice to build in regular time to ask ourselves: Who’s drawn to our leadership? so we can make sure the powerful attractions we’re drawing in as leaders are actually helping (positive) and not hindering (negative) our team’s and organization’s potential for success.
